What is
GEO?

Generative engine optimization, or GEO, helps a brand appear in AI answers. It starts with SEO. It also covers clear brand facts, proof, citations, and tracking.

By Brandon BurnworthEvidence-led guidance

01 · Definition

GEO helps AI tools find, understand, and choose your brand.

An AI answer may use search results, product feeds, trusted data, and public web pages. GEO makes those facts clear so AI tools can find the brand, check its claims, and cite its pages.

Some people call it AI search optimization or answer engine optimization. The name matters less than the work.

02 · Relationship

GEO does not replace SEO.

Google’s current guidance explains how its AI search features use the Search index. Google must index a page before that page can support an AI Overview or AI Mode answer.

SEO helps your pages get found. GEO also helps your brand appear, earn citations, and be described correctly.

Good SEO still matters. Pages should be fast, useful, easy to crawl, and easy to reach through links. GEO also checks how other sources describe a brand and whether its information is useful and original enough to cite.

03 · Best practices

What works in 2026

  1. Put key facts in clear text. Do not hide your main offer in images, forms, scripts, or pages that need a login.
  2. Keep brand facts the same everywhere. Use the same company name, people, services, location, and contact details on your site and trusted profiles.
  3. Publish something useful and new. Share real experience, your own data, clear methods, and fair comparisons. These give AI tools a reason to cite you.
  4. Help with the full buying choice. Explain choices, limits, steps, proof, and what to do next. Do not make thin pages for each keyword.
  5. Support claims. Link to original sources. Explain how you got the facts. Name the writer and update old details.
  6. Keep search tools up to date. Keep your sitemap and main page links correct. Use Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools to inspect discovery. IndexNow can notify participating engines of changed URLs; it does not submit URLs to Google or guarantee indexing.

What not to rely on

Google says there is no special AI schema required and that `llms.txt`, forced content chunking, pages for every query variation, and inauthentic mentions do not provide a Google generative-search advantage. Structured data is still useful when it accurately describes visible information and supports established search features.

04 · Measurement

Track visibility and sales.

A useful plan tracks both SEO results and AI visibility:

  • Indexed coverage and non-branded rankings
  • Brand inclusion for controlled prompt sets
  • Citation share and cited URLs
  • Accuracy and sentiment of brand descriptions
  • AI referral quality and assisted conversions
  • Branded-search growth and qualified pipeline

Our audit method records the exact questions, platforms, dates, mentions and cited URLs so repeated samples can be compared. Results should be viewed as trends. AI answers can change for each person and search. No one can promise a fixed answer or a permanent citation.

Review the generative AI inclusion setting and available reports in Search Console. Google’s August 31, 2026 update describes the worldwide rollout of these controls and insights. Bing’s AI Performance reporting provides a separate view of citations on supported experiences.
